The History and Importance of Quilombos in Brazil — and How RFM Is Working With Quilombola Communities to Address Climate Change

Across Brazil, quilombos stand as powerful symbols of resistance, cultural resilience, and environmental stewardship. Born from the struggle for freedom, these communities continue to protect their heritage while defending some of the country’s most threatened ecosystems. Today, quilombos are not just historical reminders—they are essential partners in building climate resilience. RFM Productions is honored to stand with quilombola leaders, helping amplify their stories and supporting community-led climate solutions.

A Moment With Quilombola Representatives at COP30

RFM Productions had the privilege of spending time with quilombola representatives from Amapá during COP30. Their cultural leadership, environmental knowledge, and commitment to climate justice continue to inspire our work.

A Brief History of Quilombos

Quilombos emerged in the 17th century as settlements founded by Africans who escaped slavery. Over time, they became multi-ethnic communities that welcomed Indigenous peoples, Afro-descendant families, and others escaping oppression.

The most famous, Quilombo dos Palmares, stood for nearly a century as a powerful autonomous society resisting colonial rule. Leaders like Zumbi and Dandara left a legacy of courage that continues to shape Afro-Brazilian identity.

Today, over 3,000 quilombola communities are recognized across Brazil. Many are located in forests, mangroves, and river basins—regions crucial for climate stability.

Why Quilombos Matter Today

1. Environmental Guardianship

Quilombola land-management practices protect biodiversity and carbon-rich landscapes. Studies show that quilombo territories often have lower deforestation rates than surrounding areas.

2. Cultural Continuity

These communities preserve languages, music, dance, food traditions, and spiritual practices that form the foundation of Afro-Brazilian cultural life.

3. Climate Resilience and Local Leadership

Quilombola governance models—collective, inclusive, resource-conscious—offer powerful examples for building climate-resistant societies.

How RFM Productions Is Working With Quilombos on Climate Solutions

RFM’s partnership with quilombola communities is grounded in respect, collaboration, and the belief that climate action must be community-led.

1. Storytelling and Global Visibility

We work with quilombola leaders to document their knowledge, struggles, and climate innovations—sharing these stories across Brazil and at global platforms like COP30.

2. Supporting Community-Led Climate Resilience

Our collaborations focus on:
• Wildfire prevention
• Flood and drought resilience
• Food security through sustainable agriculture
• Youth leadership and digital training
• Protection of cultural and environmental heritage

3. Strengthening Access to Climate Finance

Quilombos safeguard nature but are often excluded from climate funding. RFM is working with partners to help communities:
• Secure financing for local environmental initiatives
• Strengthen territorial rights
• Grow sustainable, climate-smart local economies

Honoring the Past, Building the Future

Quilombos teach us that freedom, culture, and environmental care are deeply interconnected. Their knowledge is not just historical—it is vital to Brazil’s climate future.

RFM Productions is committed to walking alongside quilombola communities, amplifying their leadership, and co-creating real solutions for people and planet.
