In the heart of the Brazilian Amazon, along the shimmering waters of the Tapaj\u00f3s River, a powerful movement is rising. The Tupinamb\u00e1 people \u2014 guardians of forest, river, memory, and spirit \u2014 are facing unprecedented threats from pollution, infrastructure megaprojects, and policies that undermine their rights.

At the forefront of this resistance stands Cacique Gilson Tupinamb\u00e1, coordinator of CITUPI (Conselho Ind\u00edgena Tupinamb\u00e1 do Baixo Tapaj\u00f3s). When RFM met with Gilson, his testimony about the contamination affecting his community was heartbreaking, urgent, and impossible to ignore.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Who Are CITUPI and the Tupinamb\u00e1 of the Lower Tapaj\u00f3s?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

CITUPI represents around 21 Tupinamb\u00e1 villages along the lower Tapaj\u00f3s. Their territory is more than land \u2014 it is a living spiritual landscape shaped by sacred rivers, forests, and stone formations known as pedrais.<\/p>

CITUPI\u2019s mission includes:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

\u2022 Defending territorial rights
\u2022 Protecting the Tapaj\u00f3s River and its sacred sites
\u2022 Ensuring Free, Prior, and Informed Consultation (FPIC)
\u2022 Advocating against extractive, polluting, and land-grabbing projects
\u2022 Safeguarding cultural and spiritual traditions<\/p>

This council is not only a political body \u2014 it is a guardian of memory and ancestral continuity.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Gilson Tupinamb\u00e1: Leader, Defender, Visionary
<\/span><\/strong><\/p>

As Coordinator of CITUPI, Cacique Gilson is one of the most prominent Tupinamb\u00e1 leaders confronting threats to his peoples\u2019 survival.

He has spoken out nationally and internationally to expose the dangers facing the Tapaj\u00f3s basin:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>

\u2022 Growing mercury contamination from illegal mining
\u2022 Increased barge traffic and dredging that disturb sacred riverbeds
\u2022 The mega-project Ferrogr\u00e3o railway, which would accelerate deforestation and river privatization
\u2022 Threats and persecution against indigenous leaders<\/p>

When speaking to RFM, Gilson described how contamination has infiltrated the daily life of Tupinamb\u00e1 families \u2014 poisoning the fish they depend on, polluting the water they drink, and causing irreversible health impacts.<\/p>

His leadership is rooted in courage, community, and ancestral responsibility.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

CITUPI\u2019s Struggle<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

1. Fighting Environmental Contamination<\/span><\/p>

Mercury pollution has become a silent catastrophe. It threatens food security, cultural practices, and public health.<\/p>

Dredging, blasting, and industrial waterways worsen the crisis \u2014 stirring up toxic sediments and destroying habitats.<\/p>\n

CITUPI insists: the river is alive \u2014 and its contamination is a violation of life itself.<\/p>\n

2. Defending Sacred Territories<\/span><\/p>\n

The Tapaj\u00f3s is not simply a river. It is a spiritual being, part of the Tupinamb\u00e1 cosmology.
