A Brief History of Quilombos
<\/span><\/strong><\/p>

Quilombos emerged in the 17th century as settlements founded by Africans who escaped slavery. Over time, they became multi-ethnic communities that welcomed Indigenous peoples, Afro-descendant families, and others escaping oppression.<\/p>

The most famous, Quilombo dos Palmares, stood for nearly a century as a powerful autonomous society resisting colonial rule. Leaders like Zumbi and Dandara left a legacy of courage that continues to shape Afro-Brazilian identity.<\/p>

Today, over 3,000 quilombola communities are recognized across Brazil. Many are located in forests, mangroves, and river basins\u2014regions crucial for climate stability.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
